Scoliosis and posture problems in children — rehabilitation in Warsaw

A teacher has mentioned that your child sits crookedly. Or you have noticed yourselves that one shoulder blade sticks out more than the other, and that trousers hang unevenly. The growing years are when posture changes fastest — in both directions.

We start with an unhurried examination: we look at posture, check trunk rotation in forward bending, and assess the mobility of the spine and hips and the alignment of the feet. We talk to the child too, not only to the parent.

After the examination we tell you plainly what we see and what it means: whether exercise and a change of habits will be enough, or whether an orthopaedic consultation is needed. The angle of the curve on the X-ray, bracing and surgical treatment are decisions for a doctor.

Typical symptoms

  • One shoulder or one shoulder blade clearly higher than the other
  • An uneven waistline and pelvic alignment
  • A hump on one side of the back, visible on bending forward
  • Slouching and a head that sits forward
  • Flat feet or heels that roll inwards
  • Tiring quickly and back pain after a day at school

Most common causes

  • The most common curvature in teenagers has no single established cause (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis)
  • A rapid growth spurt during puberty
  • Little physical activity and many hours spent sitting
  • Postural habits while studying and using a phone
  • A difference in leg length, or foot problems
  • Scoliosis in the family

How we reach a diagnosis

  1. A history taken from parent and child, including questions about growth rate and activity
  2. Assessment of standing posture — from the front, from the side and from behind
  3. Adam's forward bend test and assessment of trunk rotation
  4. Assessment of the mobility of the spine and hips and of the alignment of the feet
  5. A review of X-rays if any have been taken — the Cobb angle is assessed by a doctor
  6. A clear answer on whether and when an orthopaedic consultation is needed

How we run your therapy

We match the methods to what the assessment shows — usually combining several of the following.

Corrective exercise therapy

Exercises matched to the type of problem: work on body alignment, symmetry and the endurance of the postural muscles.

Manual therapy and myofascial techniques

Gentle work on restrictions in movement, adapted to the child's age.

Children's massage

Reducing tension in the muscles alongside the spine, carried out by a therapist who works with children.

Home exercises and everyday habits

A set to work through at home, advice on setting up the study desk, choosing a school bag and suggestions for physical activity.

Regular progress checks

Re-assessment at agreed intervals — during the growing years the picture changes quickly.

When to see a doctor urgently instead of a physiotherapist

The symptoms below are not an indication for physiotherapy. If you have any of them, contact a doctor urgently or go to the emergency department (SOR).

  • Marked, rapidly progressing asymmetry of the trunk during a growth spurt
  • A curvature noticed in a child before the age of 10
  • Back pain that wakes the child at night or persists despite rest
  • Altered sensation, loss of strength or problems with walking
  • Problems passing urine or stools
  • Pain after a fall from height or another serious injury

If your condition suddenly gets worse, call 112. If we notice any of these signs during your assessment, we will not start therapy and will refer you to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

From what age do you see children?

We work with children and teenagers. We match the scope of therapy and massage to the child's age — the price list has separate entries for the different age groups.

Will exercises straighten my child's spine?

The aim of therapy is to improve body alignment, strength and mobility, and to keep track of how posture changes during the growing years. We do not promise to straighten a curve — bracing and surgical treatment are decided by a doctor on the basis of an X-ray.

Is an X-ray needed before the visit?

It is not required for a consultation. If you have one, bring it with you. If the examination shows it is needed, we will ask you to arrange an orthopaedic consultation.

How often should my child come?

We agree the frequency after the examination. A large part of the work happens at home — the parent receives a set of exercises and guidance on how to check they are done correctly.
