Rehabilitation after surgery and injury, including ACL reconstruction — Warsaw

Surgery, or the day the cast comes off, is only half the journey. The other half is getting back your range of motion, your strength and your trust in your own leg or arm — and that is the part we go through together, step by step.

We work within the instructions given by your surgeon. Your discharge letter and post-operative protocol are our starting point — we do not rush stages on our own initiative and we do not change a doctor's instructions.

We judge progress by measurement: range of motion, limb girth, strength and movement quality compared with the healthy side. That way it is clear when you can move on to the next stage and when you need to stay with the current one.

What patients most often come to us with

  • Restricted range of motion in the operated joint
  • Muscle weakness and wasting after a period of immobilisation
  • Swelling that persists even though the wound has healed
  • A limp and instinctively keeping weight off the limb
  • A scar that pulls and limits movement
  • Fear of going back to sport and to full loading

When to come for rehabilitation

  • After anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction
  • After knee arthroscopy and meniscus procedures
  • After hip or knee joint replacement (arthroplasty)
  • After fractures and once a cast or brace comes off
  • After dislocations and ligament injuries of the ankle or the shoulder
  • After spinal surgery — within the scope agreed with your surgeon

How we reach a diagnosis

  1. Going through your discharge letter and your surgeon's instructions
  2. Measuring range of motion and limb girth
  3. Assessing strength, control and movement quality against the healthy side
  4. Assessing the scar, the swelling and your tolerance to loading
  5. Agreeing the goal: getting back to work, to everyday function or to sport
  6. Setting the criteria that must be met before we move to the next stage

How we run your therapy

We match the methods to what the assessment shows — usually combining several of the following.

Staged exercise therapy

From regaining range of motion and control, through strengthening, to exercises specific to your own activity.

Manual therapy and scar work

Restoring mobility in the joint and in the soft tissue around the operated area.

Lymphatic drainage massage

Reducing swelling that persists after the procedure.

Electrical stimulation

Support for a weakened muscle, most often the quadriceps.

Medical training therapy

The last stage: loads close to those waiting for you at work or in sport.

Kinesiology taping and sports massage

Support as you return to training and to heavier loads.

Who will run your therapy

Licensed physiotherapists with a PWZFz licence number.

When to see a doctor urgently instead of a physiotherapist

The symptoms below are not an indication for physiotherapy. If you have any of them, contact a doctor urgently or go to the emergency department (SOR).

  • Increasing pain, redness and warmth around the wound, together with a fever — a possible infection
  • Discharge from the wound, or the wound opening up
  • Sudden swelling of one calf with pain — suspected deep vein thrombosis
  • Breathlessness or chest pain — call 112
  • A sudden loss of stability or catching in the operated joint
  • Numbness, paleness or coldness in the limb below the site of the operation

If your condition suddenly gets worse, call 112. If we notice any of these signs during your assessment, we will not start therapy and will refer you to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start rehabilitation after surgery?

The timing is set by your surgeon in the post-operative instructions, and we plan our work according to them. If you are unsure, bring your paperwork — we will go through it together.

How long is the return to sport after ACL reconstruction?

The time is individual and depends on your surgeon's protocol, on how healing goes and on your results in functional tests. We do not state a number of months in advance — readiness for sport is decided by the results of the assessment and by your doctor's instructions.

Do you provide rehabilitation after joint replacement?

Yes, after hip and knee replacement, within the scope set out by your surgeon.

I don't have a referral — can I still come?

Yes, a referral is not required. It helps to bring your hospital discharge letter and your doctor's instructions.
