Treatment

Respiratory rehabilitation and post-COVID-19 therapy — Warsaw

You climb to the second floor and have to stop. Or months after an infection you still cannot get back to the form you had before, and a walk that used to be a warm-up now finishes off your day. Breathing is muscle work — and muscles can be trained.

Respiratory rehabilitation complements the treatment your doctor is providing; it does not replace it. We do not modify or stop any medication — that is a decision for the doctor treating you.

In our team this area is looked after by Anita, MSc Physiotherapy. We work on your breathing pattern, the mobility of the chest and a gradual increase in exercise tolerance, at a pace matched to your symptoms.

Typical symptoms

  • Breathlessness during activity that used to be no trouble
  • A sense of not being able to take a full breath, and shallow, rapid breathing
  • Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance after an infection
  • A cough and difficulty clearing secretions
  • Tension and pain in the chest, the neck and between the shoulder blades
  • Breathing into the upper chest, with the shoulders lifting

Who we help

  • People who have had COVID-19 and still have breathlessness and reduced fitness
  • Patients with asthma and COPD — alongside the treatment their doctor is providing
  • People with sleep apnoea, working on the breathing pattern and the diaphragm
  • People with an inefficient breathing pattern and tension in the breathing muscles
  • People whose neck and chest tension increases under stress
  • Patients after chest or abdominal surgery — following consultation with their doctor

How we reach a diagnosis

  1. History: how the illness has run, the medication you take, what limits you day to day
  2. Observation of your breathing pattern at rest and during exertion
  3. Assessment of chest mobility and of how the diaphragm is working
  4. Assessment of tension in the accessory breathing muscles — neck, shoulders and intercostals
  5. A simple exercise tolerance test suited to your condition
  6. A review of your medical records, if you have them

How we run your therapy

We match the methods to what the assessment shows — usually combining several of the following.

Breathing exercises

Learning diaphragmatic breathing, a longer out-breath and techniques that make clearing secretions easier.

Manual therapy and myofascial techniques

Work on the mobility of the ribs, the diaphragm and the thoracic spine.

Kinesiotherapy

Gradually increasing your exercise tolerance, at a pace matched to your symptoms.

Deep tissue massage

Reducing tension in the accessory breathing muscles — neck, shoulders and intercostals.

Medical training therapy

Getting back to activity with breathing control and graded loading.

Who will run your therapy

Licensed physiotherapists with a PWZFz licence number.

When to see a doctor urgently instead of a physiotherapist

The symptoms below are not an indication for physiotherapy. If you have any of them, contact a doctor urgently or go to the emergency department (SOR).

  • Sudden, severe breathlessness or chest pain — call 112
  • Blue lips or fingers, confusion, fainting
  • Coughing up blood
  • A fever lasting several days along with increasing breathlessness
  • Swelling and pain in one calf accompanied by breathlessness — suspected pulmonary embolism
  • Breathlessness that does not ease at rest

If your condition suddenly gets worse, call 112. If we notice any of these signs during your assessment, we will not start therapy and will refer you to a doctor.
